You may have some questions about booking an appointment and what your options are.
Here is a list of common questions which might be helpful.
Can I see a psychologist without a GP referral?
Yes. You can see a psychologist without a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and GP referral.
You could instead use private health insurance, a third party payment provider or pay for the session out of pocket.
We also have a number of therapists who offer low cost appointment options. Learn more here.
What happens if I don’t think my therapist is a good match for me?
While we make every effort to match you with a therapist who suits your needs, you may not always be happy. If this is the case you can request an appointment with a different therapist (although this may mean waiting for an available appointment).
How much will I expect to pay for my appointment?
The referral process
If you have questions about The Referral Process you can visit our dedicated page here.
What parking options are available?
Limited one-hour and two-hour street parking is often available but cannot be relied upon. Our offices are a few minutes’ walk from the Central Business District of Melbourne and an eight-minute walk from both Melbourne Central Train Station and from Parliament Train Station. There are various pay car parks, that you may wish to consider if you are parking while attending an extended session, such as Regal Parking 43 Mackenzie Street Melbourne (two minutes’ walk) or Lygon Street Car Park 204 Lygon Street Carlton (seven minutes’ walk).
How can I avoid steps at your practice?
For individuals who cannot use steps we do have access at the rear of 33 Drummond Street via Trades Hall Place. If you are unable to use steps please inform reception of this when you contact us to book an appointment as some of our rooms are only accessible via stairs.
I have a concession/senior/healthcare card. Do you offer lower-cost appointments?
Some of our therapists do have low cost appointments available.
For more information on low cost appointments you can visit our dedicated page or contact reception on 0424 220 314 or via email at [email protected].
Do you offer after hours or weekend appointments?
Some of our therapists do offer after hours appointments.
If you are looking for an after hours appointment please contact reception on 0424 220 314 or via email at [email protected].
How long will I have to wait for an appointment?
Depending on the therapist you book with your wait time can range from one week with some of our newer therapists to a few months if you want an appointment with our senior psychologists.
Are appointments online or face-to-face?
We offer both face-to-face appointments and online telehealth appointments depending on your needs. We do recommend face-to-face appointments, at least for your initial session, but you will still receive excellent therapy via telehealth.
What is the difference between clinical psychologists, general psychologists, provisional psychologists and counsellors?
Clinical Psychologists are highly trained professionals who specialise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating various mental health and psychological disorders. They have typically completed doctoral-level training (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical psychology, which includes both academic coursework and supervised clinical experience.
General Psychologists are Psychologists who work in a clinical setting but have not yet completed their clinical registrar program. They usually have a general background in psychology, having completed their education in psychology, which typically involves a bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology.
Provisional Psychologists are therapists who have completed their academic training in psychology but are still gaining supervised practical experience before becoming fully licensed psychologists. These individuals are often completing the required hours of supervised practice as part of the licensing process.
Counsellors are professionals who provide talk therapy and support to individuals, couples, families, and groups. They are trained to address emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns through various therapeutic approaches.
Another difference is Medicare Rebates.
You are eligible for a Medicare rebate of $136.65 (Clinical Psychologist) or $92.90 (General Psychologist) for up to 10 sessions per calendar year with a Mental Health Care Plan from a GP.
Medicare does not offer a rebate for appointments with Provisional Psychologists or Counsellors.
How long are sessions?
A typical session lasts for around 50 minutes. For individuals specifically seeking ISTDP a longer initial session (90-150 minutes) is recommended but this is up to the individual.
How long will I need to be in therapy for?
It is very hard to know how long you will need to be in therapy for to achieve major change and long-term symptom relief. This depends on a large number of variables which means therapy can range from a few months to a process that continues for a number of years.
Is what we talk about confidential?
Sessions are confidential unless you or another person is at serious risk of harm, or if a court orders the disclosure of information, or you give written permission for information to be provided to a third party and it is deemed appropriate by the practitioner to do so.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you give as much notice as possible when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment so that we can try to fill the appointment allowing all clients an opportunity to receive therapy.
Cancelled or rescheduled appointments within 48 business hours’ notice incur the full session fee.
Appointments that are missed without notification are also charged the full appointment fee.
You can view and manage your appointments here.
Can I switch therapists?
Yes. If you decide that your current therapist is not the right fit for you it is possible to switch to another therapist.
What preparation is required for a telehealth appointment?
For a telehealth appointment you need a device with a camera and microphone such as a laptop or phone, you also need a stable internet connection and you need to be somewhere private so as to ensure the session is confidential and has no interruptions.
Can my friend/family member also see my psychologist?
Your psychologist is not allowed to see your friend/family member due to the Australian Psychological Society code of ethics section C.3. Conflict of Interest.
We suggest instead asking your psychologist for suggestions to pass on to your friend/family member.
What are the Medicare rebates?
The Medicare rebate for a clinical psychologist is $136.65 and for a general psychologist is $92.90.
Medicare rebates generally increase on the 1st of July each year.
The Medicare easyclaim system is available if you are paying in person. Please ask reception to process your rebate on the spot.
We will use the Medicare Online system for all other claims.
